# [v0 dev] new chat in project does not open file tree or preview

I have an existing project created in v0, been working on it throughout the day.

I created a new chat for the same project. The new chat does not have the file tree or the preview pane. There are no buttons or menu options to toggle either. The chat context also doesn't have access to the project's codebase - confirmed by v0 itself:

Thanks

Hey, Avioing!

It'd be helpful if you could share some screenshots or the chat so that we can share it as feedback internally

Pauline, tx. Is there a way to create a case - instead of posting these details in a public forum? Tx!

I added a s/shot to the first, original post in this topic. Tx

Great, thank you! I'll clolse this one for now.

EDIT: opened again, sorry! I was confused by other topics you'd opened.

I have the same issue/error. A chat within a project can build files etc for the project but if I start another chat I can’t see or interact with those files.

> I start another chat I can’t see or interact with those files.

Did you try forking the existing chat to a new one?

@avioing I realised I didn't ask the same question for you. Or did you just start a new chat?

Avioing (@avioing) · 2025-02-07

just started a new chat. i assumed that forking implied forking the code, and i wasn't interested in doing that.

in the UI the implications of "forking" are not clear. perhaps it's a messaging / UI issue?

I am having the same issues. each chat should reference the project and existing codebase, not create a whole new project. that has been my biggest point of confusion so far. and directing the chat to not make a new codebase does nothing, ive even tried putting it in instructions of the project.

Hey by any cha ce has anyone offered a solution to this? This is my biggest point of confusion too. Thanks

Lushvirtual (@lushvirtual) · 2025-05-03

Hey by any chance did you ever find a solution to this? This has also been my biggest point of confusion too

Pauline P. Narvas (@pawlean) · 2025-05-06

Hey @missmanagement @lushvirtual! Are you still seeing this? Could you share a chat example with us to dig a bit deeper?

Morgan @ Miss Management (@missmanagement) · 2025-05-06

this happens every time. here is an example of the most recent chat I started in a project to update the ui: https://v0.dev/chat/generate-ui-from-prd-5A8GqSZIzEu
