AI Gateway returns "Free credits restricted" error despite BYOK set up

When my app makes a request through the Vercel AI Gateway, I receive the following 500 error:
**500 {"error":"AI generation failed","details":"Free credits temporarily have restricted access due to abuse. We are working on a resolution. Paid credits continue to have unrestricted access. Purchase credits at https://vercel.com/d?to=%2F%5Bteam%5D%2F~%2Fai%3Fmodal%3Dtop-up"}

Since I’ve added BYOK for both Anthropic and OpenAI, I’d expect requests to be routed through my own provider keys and billed directly to those providers not being blocked by Vercel’s credit abuse restriction.

Do you have any spare AI Gateway credits on your account?

BYOK falls back to system credentials to keep your requests running if your added keys fail. If that fallback happens, but you don’t have any AI Gateway credits available, that could cause that error message.
