AI Gateway with BYOK: Free Credits Error and Rate Limit Question

I am currently using Vercel AI Gateway with BYOK (Bring Your Own Key) and encountering the following errors:

UnknownError: Free credits temporarily have restricted access due to abuse. We are working on a resolution. Paid credits continue to have unrestricted access. Purchase credits at https://vercel.com/d?to=%2F%5Bteam%5D%2F%7E%2Fai%3Fmodal%3Dtop-up

UnknownError: Free credits temporarily have rate limits in place due to abuse. We are working on a resolution. Try again later, or pay for credits which continue to have unrestricted access. Purchase credits at https://vercel.com/d?to=%2F%5Bteam%5D%2F%7E%2Fai%3Fmodal%3Dtop-up

Based on these error messages, I understand that:

  • Even when using BYOK, restrictions apply if I’m on the free credits tier
  • Purchasing AI Gateway Credits via the provided link should remove these restrictions

Could you please confirm if my understanding is correct?

Additionally, I have a question:
What are the rate limits after purchasing AI Gateway Credits? I’ve reviewed the documentation at AI Gateway but couldn’t find specific information about rate limits for paid credits. If there’s a documentation page covering this, I would greatly appreciate a link to it.

I’d like to share an excerpt from the Vercel support team’s response:

Reason for the restrictions

  • Due to previous abuse, rate limits are enforced on the free tier even when using BYOK

Solution

  • By purchasing AI credits:

    • Restricted models will become available

    • Rate limits will be increased

Regarding rate limits

  • Exact numbers are not published (due to variations from providers)

  • AI Gateway rate limits are at least equal to or higher than direct provider limits

  • If you encounter rate limits, contact support for possible individual limit increases
