Custom domain verification

Overview

After adding and configuring a custom domain, some users may need to verify their domain.

“The domain may already be associated with another account.”

This message appears for various reasons:

  • The domain is already owned by another team.
  • You’re trying to use a subdomain from a larger organization (such as a university).
  • The domain you purchased was previously owned by someone else who used it for a Vercel project.

Solution

To resolve this, you typically need to add a TXT record to your DNS settings. This verification step ensures we know that you own the domain. Note: If you’re in larger organizations, like universities, you may need to work with an admin to get the domain verified.

Steps to Add a TXT Record:

  1. Access Your DNS Settings

    • Log in to your DNS provider’s website
    • Navigate to the DNS management section
  2. Add a TXT Record

    • Create a new TXT record
    • In the “Name” or “Host” field, enter @ or leave it blank
    • In the “Value” field, enter the verification code provided by us
  3. Save Changes

    • Save the TXT record
    • Wait for DNS propagation, which can take up to 48 hours

Verify the TXT Record

Use tools like What’s My DNS to verify that the TXT record has been added. If you’re not seeing the record immediately, wait at least 24 hours before checking again.

I’m facing a similar issue, I have a former team member who I can’t reach anymore using my domain and I want to use it on my project.

I really don’t understand this error

" Another Vercel account is using this domain. Set the TXT record on _vercel.domain.com to prove ownership of the domain in order to start using it on this project. Once the verification is completed and the domain is successfully configured, the TXT record can be removed."

So you said to set a TXT record, but what is the value for it? Do I use the same one that is provided for domain.com? I don’t see a value anywhere for _vercel.domain.com

I tried using the same value as domain.com but I’m not sure if it’s working it’s been over 24 hours already and DNS checker is not fetching it, except for China.
