Domain Invalid Configuration?

Hi, I had built a website for a client and hosted it on vercel with no issues. The client already had their own domain, so I went into their DNS settings and edited the A and CNAME records so they matched the ones on vercel. A few days ago I got an invalid configuration warning, and the site is no longer active or working. Instead, the clients old website is being shown – instead of the new one i built for them: https://canasia1-6wfd8jl02-dhaliwalrajiv-gmailcoms-projects.vercel.app/

I’ve tried deleting and re-adding the domain from vercel dashboard, as well as deleting and re adding the dns on the clients hosting provider. Waited 48 hours and still not working. I deleted the clients A and CNAME and matched with vercel, so i’m not sure why their old website is still showing up.

I only did the web dev for them, they have a guy who hosted their previous website as well as currently hosting their email services, he has not responded to my requests.

I’m confused as what I should do next. Any help is appreciated!

The domain troubleshooting guide can help with most custom domain configuration issues. You might be able to use that guide to solve it before a human is available to help you. Then you can come back here and share the answer for bonus points.

You can also use v0 to narrow down the possibilities.

Hi @jeevyd, welcome to the Vercel Community!

I think the DNS propagation hasn’t gone through yet as you can see on DNS Checker - DNS Check Propagation Tool. DNS propagation can take up to 72 hours sometimes depending on your registrar. I’d request you to wait.

Please remove any conflicting A or CNAME records that point to the older values.

Hi Anshuman, whats strange is that last time i transfered their domain over and hosted on vercel, it was almost instant (~5-10 min). I will wait another 24 hours, but i did originally initiate this on september 10th, so it technically has been longer than 72 hours.

Hi @jeevyd, yes typically it should be immediate but in rare cases it takes longer. I’d still ask you to double check all the records are correctly updated and DNS propagation has completed.

hey @anshumanb i just got the following email alert from vercel:

“Hi ,

Your Team (jondoe’s projects) has 1 domain assigned to project canasia1 with invalid configurations.

Please update or remove these domain configurations on the Vercel dashboard.”

What does this mean?

Thanks

Hi @jeevyd, it means the same as you shared in the screenshot earlier.

Did you follow the instructions and remove/re-add it?

Hey @anshumanb yes, i removed and re added the domain from the vercel dashboard. I think breifly it had switched my root domain from production to a 703 redirect to my subdomain, but I switched it back to as follows:

Again, I’m at a loss here and not sure whats going on, because this worked when I originally built the site without any issues, and the A and CNAME records match on the DNS settings, and I’ve waited several days now.

Hi @jeevyd, I understand that it’s frustrating. But, it seems like an issue with your domain registrar because I don’t see the DNS records DNS Checker - DNS Check Propagation Tool and there’s nothing Vercel can do until these records are propagated.

May I know who’s your domain registrar and have you spoken to them about the DNS propagation issue?

So the domain is through IONOS but its hosted and the nameservers are on Easyonnet. I just sent an email to the support at Easyonnet and will update back with what they say.

Thanks

Thanks for adding this information. IONOS has had trouble with DNS propagation in past as well. I’ve seen at least 2-3 such cases myself. It’s best to use Vercel Nameservers if possible.

Interesting, thanks for that information. Strange that it had worked for me with vercel before.

I don’t think i can use vercel nameservers because I don’t want to mess with my clients email services that his IT guy had set up, and is currently managing.

Yes, that’s the issue I saw with other IONOS users that it works and then stops working sometime.
