Plan: Hobby
Project: artrade
Framework: Next.js 16
Page: Project Settings → Environment Variables
Summary
Adding one new Production-only Secret environment variable shows a success state in the dashboard, but the variable is never established: it is missing from a freshly loaded project view and the team Activity Log records no environment-variable event for it.
Variable
- Key:
ARTRADE_OWNER_USER_ID - Type: Secret
- Environment: Production only (Preview, Development and Pre-production off)
- The value is private and will not be shared here.
Steps
This was reproduced four times on October 25, 2026:
- Open the project → Settings → Environment Variables.
- The list does not contain
ARTRADE_OWNER_USER_ID. - Add Environment Variable → key
ARTRADE_OWNER_USER_ID, type Secret, Production only. - Enter the value privately and click Add/Save once.
- The dialog closes, a success state appears, and the row appears in the list.
- A freshly loaded project view does not list the variable. In three attempts, a hard reload of the same tab also removed it. In one clean Guest-session attempt, the row still appeared after the hard reload in that session, but a separate freshly loaded project view did not contain it.
- Team Activity Log shows no Created/Updated/Deleted Environment Variable event corresponding to any of these attempts.
The issue was reproduced both in a normal Chrome profile and in a clean Chrome Guest profile with no extensions.
Expected
A successful Secret environment-variable creation should persist in the project configuration and should be represented by the corresponding environment-variable operation in Activity Log.
Activity Log already records environment-variable changes for this same project, so we know those events normally appear.
Actual
The dashboard reports success, but no corresponding Activity Log event is recorded and freshly loaded project state does not contain the variable.
Controls already checked
- Correct project and Environment Variables page confirmed.
- No duplicate or
NEXT_PUBLIC_variant of this key exists. - No redeploy was performed after the failed saves.
- Repository and deployment remained unchanged.
- Activity Log normally records environment-variable changes for this project.
- The behavior reproduced in a clean Chrome Guest profile without extensions.
Impact
This blocks a server-only Production configuration value required before enabling a feature.
The application remains safe meanwhile because the feature fails closed while the binding is absent.
Privacy
No secret value, user UUID, credential or token will be posted. Any screenshots, if later requested, will contain names/status only and never environment-variable values.
Root cause is unknown to us.
Is there anything account-, plan-, project- or dashboard-specific that could cause the UI to report a successful Secret environment-variable creation without the change persisting or producing an Activity Log event?
