New 2FA recovery option

We understand that being locked out of your account is frustrating, so today we shipped a better recovery option.

If your account is eligible, you can use our new self-service recovery flow by following these steps:

  1. Go to vercel.com/login
  2. Choose to sign in using the email + one-time password (OTP) option.
  3. Select Use another sign-in method
  4. Verify your identity using the GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket account previously linked to your Vercel account
  5. Follow the remaining prompts to complete the recovery process

If you’re not able to recover your account using the method above, you can still open a case using the Start 2FA recovery option on the Two-Factor Authentication login screen. But you do not need to open additional cases if you already have one open.

Hi Amy, thank you but this is no different. I logged in with both OTP and then Github and still it’s hard blocking requiring the 2FA which is what i don’t have access to. please help. am I not using this correctly?

Anybody? pls?

You can still get help from the support team if you weren’t able to use the new 2FA recovery option. If you’ve already opened an account recovery case then they’ll be in touch soon with an update or request for more info if additional details are needed

that’s the thing it’s been 7 days now and i have at least 6 projects completely BLOCKED… just because of a 2FA problem. pls pls help!

Do you have a support case number? It would look something like 01234567

I can check the status if you can give me that number :folded_hands:

Hey Amy,

I’m also having the unintentional 2FA issue. I didn’t even get a support case number, I just got this reply email back. I did the action it requested, but I have not heard back yet.

HELP!! I am stagnating for work right now.

from Vercel:

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Vercel Support!

We are currently experiencing a high volume of cases related to 2FA recovery and are working to review them as quickly as we can. If your request is not related to removing 2FA, MFA, passkey, etc. please return to www.vercel.com/accountrecovery and re-submit your request by selecting the most accurate responses to each question.

What if I lost access to my 2FA method, or am unsure how 2FA was set up on my account?

If you downloaded account recovery keys during 2FA setup, we strongly encourage you to locate and use those. These recovery keys are designed to immediately help you restore access if your 2FA device or method becomes unavailable.

What can I do if I cannot locate my recovery keys?

IMPORTANT: to authorize Vercel to remove 2FA from your account you must reply to this email.

If you don’t have access to your recovery keys, we may be able to help by disabling 2FA on your account. Please be sure you have provided as much of the following information as possible if you haven’t already.

1. What full email address is associated with the account?
2. What is the date of the account creation?
3. Name the team(s) associated with the account.
4. What phone number (with country code) is associated with the account?
5. What git provider and username is associated with the account?
6. Name all (or 3, whichever is smaller) of the project name(s) and/or URL(s) associated with the account.
7. If a payment method is present, please provide:

  • The last four digits of your payment method(s)
  • The expiration date of your payment method(s)
  • Card type (Visa/Mastercard/etc.)

Please note that incomplete or incorrect information may delay our ability to help.

Once we receive a reply from you, our team will be able to prioritize review of your request.

@iman-6941 did you try the new 2FA recovery steps listed in that email? Another way I’ve seen people get back into their account instantly is with a passkey they forgot the created. Often found on another device or iCloud Keychain. Please give that a try and let me know how it goes

@amyegan - I only have bad news. i have not heard anything back from anyone Amy. this is disconcerting. I lost one client yesterday because he felt i was making up stories and was full of excuses. the truth is i believe they themselves lost the bigger client they were serving becuase this project is locked up. i have 3 updates in code that i cannot push because my account is not allowing me to get back in. PLEASE verify. I own the account. ivan@mbakop.com is the ID and iMbakop is the Github associated. this is now literally terminal for my business. please please. I filled out www.vercel.com/accountrecovery TWICE with nothing more than the email i received afterwards asking me to respond to it. which i did already. still nothing. This is now closing in on 2 weeks. this is literally criminal or at best, negligent.
And no i wasn’t given a case number after filling out the form. pls use the info above to retrieve my account…

Please help!

Hey @dev-7092. It looks like you’re already talking with Alli in another thread. Let’s keep the conversation in a single thread so important info doesn’t get missed :folded_hands:

I do NOT have the codes for it. I never did. I only had my subscription for month, never had a problem loggin in thru google before now I can’t access projects becuz of this. I replied to the email verifying my account details 3 days ago. I need access. turn it the EFF off.

@iman-6941 I understand that you’re frustrated. Please remember that you need to follow the code of conduct when posting here. You’re talking to people, not bots, and rude or threatening language is not allowed.

Disabling 2FA is a security risk, which Vercel takes very seriously. That means every request is carefully reviewed by specialists to keep your account safe. The ownership verification takes some time and the team is working through a high volume of cases, which has led to longer wait times. We’ve shipped a number of system improvements to make the process faster and are working on more that will ship soon.

The 2FA recovery option at the start of this thread is one of those improvements. I recommend giving that a try if you haven’t already. Another option that has worked for many people is a passkey. Quite a few people have set them up in an iCloud Keychain, password app, or other device and forgotten about them. If you can think of where you may have created a passkey, that will let you get back into your account right away. Then you can update your 2FA settings and download backup codes.
