Why v0 Premium and Vercel accounts have separate billing and LLM charges

I feel like something’s changed with Vercel and how they are charging users. When they switched LLM selection to Max/Pro/Mini etc, I burned through the tokens in Max with maybe 20 prompts. Good education to learn when to use Max, Pro, Mini etc.

Billing Issues

Today I received an auto-recharge charge of ~$45 which I never signed up for. I never do auto-recharge so I always get alerts when I run out of cash/tokens/credits etc and top up accordingly. I turned auto-recharge off.

Account Confusion

Vercel billing was already confusing and I think this is by intent. I’m on v0 ‘Premium’ but my Vercel account is on standard (?). If I upgrade my Vercel account, I can, for example, run more than one of their internal cron jobs and many other things apparently.

Even though I pay for v0 premium, I still get hit with LLM charges and I have no idea why I would want to upgrade my rote Vercel account as I’m an individual designer, no team.

Cost Comparison

Vercel is becoming exceptionally overpriced vs Cursor/Copilot/Codex + your LLM of choice (BYO). More importantly, the company’s inability to present clear pricing options is disappointing. It is 100% intentional, in my opinion, to NOT present clear pricing options and deliberately meant to confuse the user.

Overall, my Vercel charges are ~$100 in the last week and that’s absolutely absurd for the amount of work I’m doing with it.

Would love to hear other opinions

Hi @jayhilwig, thanks for the details you shared. Let’s take your concerns one by one:

  1. This shouldn’t have happened if you have auto-recharge off. I’m sorry about this. Let me ask our team what happened here. In the meantime, you can request a self serve refund for it from Help.
  2. Vercel Platform and v0 are separate products from Vercel the company. Hence, they have separate plans and billing. You can use v0 Premium with a Vercel Hobby plan and Vercel Pro with a v0 Free plan as well. Vercel Pro comes with it’s own benefits but those are independent of v0 as a product. I’m not sure what you mean by “I still get hit with LLM charges”. v0 Premium is credit based billing, so you pay what you use.
  3. Cost comparison is something I can’t comment on because v0 is a unique product and I haven’t used the competitors myself. What I can ask though is what’s the confusion about pricing here? I can understand v0 maybe expensive for your tasks but I don’t know how the cost structure of other tools is simpler than v0.

Thanks Anshuman, I’m still working through a project with v0 and maybe it’s just me becoming more familiar with all the updates since I’ve last used the product.

I do think billing is confusing but I don’t use other Vercel parent products so when I solely use v0 but am asked to upgrade my Vercel account, I don’t think the bifurcation of charges vs features is clear. You could ask your product/design team to think about UXR around this topic. I don’t see other community responses around this being confusing but I’m pretty confident I’m not the only one.

I believe I didn’t read the fine print w/ v0 max so I’ll take this as a learning moment re: charges and only use v0 for foundational UI.
