Clarification on Commercial Use for a Community Chess Tournament Project (Rexher Cup 5)

Hi Vercel Team,

I am developing a website for a community chess tournament called “Rexher Cup 5”. The site is built with Next.js, and I would like to host it on the Hobby Plan. I want to ensure my project aligns with the “Non-Commercial Use” policy.

To be clear, the tournament is not played on the website. The site is purely for administrative and informational purposes, specifically:

  • Managing player registrations.

  • Displaying tournament standings and rankings.

  • Providing general information about the event.

Regarding the “Commercial Use” definition, I have two specific questions:

  1. Sponsor Logos: Is it allowed to display the logos of local sponsors who support the tournament on the site?

  2. External Links (Ko-fi): The event is free to enter, but I’d like to include an outbound link to an external Ko-fi page to finance tournament prizes. There, users can optionally contribute small amounts (e.g., 10€) to support the tournament and get small advantages (like entering a book raffle, having its name highlighted in the rankings…). No payments or transactions are processed through Vercel’s infrastructure. 100% of these funds (aprox 50€-80€ total) are strictly reinvested into the tournament prizes, so I am not getting any financial gain from it.

Given that the tournament has a very limited total budget (around 200€-300€), upgrading to a Pro Plan is financially unfeasible for us, as the subscription cost of a single month would consume a significant portion (around a 6-10%) of the entire prize pool.

Given that the site is a management tool for a non-profit community event and does not handle financial transactions directly, does this qualify for the Hobby Plan?

Thank you for your time and help!

The key distinction for commercial use in the Fair Use Guidelines is financial gain

Commercial usage is defined as any Deployment that is used for the purpose of financial gain of anyone involved in any part of the production of the project

If this is a community event and you’re not really making money from the site, then it should be fine!
